Take it Slowly

The first tip that we can give you to get your dog used to a collar or a leash is to take it slowly. The worst thing that you can do is to rush things, especially when you want to introduce something entirely new for your pet. 

Every dog is different and depending on his character, you will either have a really easy time, or you'll have quite a hard time getting him used to a collar or a leash. If you rush things, you can scare the dog even more than he actually is. There should be no force what so ever used over the dog. You have to let it get used to the collar on its own. If you see that he's is not feeling comfortable with it on, then you should take it off and start from the beginning.

Find the Right Collar

If you are experiencing some difficulties with the dog while you are putting a collar on, you might want to check if you have a collar that fits the dog. There are a lot of different types to choose from, and that’s why it is essential that you do your research and buy the best one you possibly can.

You should never look at other dogs and what their leash looks like because that might not work for your four-legged friend. The biggest issue you can have with a collar is that it won't fit your dog at all.

For example, if you have a smaller pooch, you have to purchase a light collar, but if your dog is large, you can go with some of the safer options like a chain collar. No matter which one you end up choosing, you have to make sure that it is not too tight for your pet. You should be able to put two fingers between the collar and the neck of your doggo.

Start on Time

Dogs can be tricky sometimes, especially when they get older. You might have heard that you can't teach an old dog new tricks and that’s said for a reason. Well, that is not completely true, but there is something about it.

For example, if you get an older mutt who never had any experience with collars, you might have issues putting in on because he will most likely refuse to wear it. That’s why it is crucial that you start getting them used to collars while they are still puppies. Later on, when they grow up, they will have no issues with wearing a leash.

Give Him some Space

At first, when you put a collar on your dog, you don’t want to scare him by dragging him close to you. They will not like that at all, and they will never get used to a leash. What you want to do at first is to give them some space to be free, let them run around a bit and take it from there.
