Tractive GPS Pet Tracker Review
Quick disclaimer: This particular model we are reviewing today uses cellular network data in order to locate your pet and will work only in the US. If you are planning to use it outside of the US consider contacting the manufacturer or purchasing another version. If on the other hand you're located in the States you can safely continue reading on our comprehensive review.
Now that we got that out of the way let's see how this marvel of technology actually works in a real-world test.
If you're in the market for a simple yet effective GPS based tracker for your adventurous canine pal or ... pretty much anything you can fit a small square-shaped device on - then the compact Tractive GPS Pet Tracker is one of the better options out there.
- GPS tracking device that is attached to an existing collar
- Integrated SIM card - utilizes mobile 3G technology
- Waterproof and submersible
- Monthly subscription
- This version only works in the US
We were very pleased with the compact and lightweight design of the receiver. The device is recommended for dog breeds that weigh over nine pounds and when attached via the plastic clips, sits comfortably around your pet's neck and doesn't feel intrusive at all. Since the model is fully sealed it has a great waterproof rating and is fully submersible up to 1m of depth. The LED light located on the front of the receiver indicates low battery and signal status.
The built-in Lithium Polymer batteries can last for days with moderate use. These are of course rechargeable so no additional purchases are required. What we noticed while using the device is that the Live Tracking feature drains battery life pretty quickly. The refresh rate is around 2 seconds which is great, but it also has a power saving feature so the device turns off Live Tracking automatically after 15 minutes in order to preserve power.
Since the design is fully sealed, the charger comes in the form of clamps which you then attach and secure to the contacts located on the back of the device. It features fast charging so you can expect to have it fully charged in about 2-3 hours.
• Very versatile
• Lightweight and compact
• Controlled via smartphone or a web app
• Sometimes struggles with single strength
• Monthly subscription
What We Liked about It
While it has its flaws, there is a certain novelty value to this product. It's so easy to use and versatile that you can practically track just about anything with it and you get all that functionality on your smartphone or on the Web so there is no need for an extra handheld device. The battery life is great, especially if you primarily use the GeoFence feature. Having the option to store way points and share additional information about your pet is also nice. A waterproof design is always a plus since you can't always count on ideal weather conditions.
What We didn’t Like
Besides the monthly subscription that is mandatory in order for the device to work, we found that it sometimes is not as reliable as we were hoping it would be. You may experience a certain lag from time to time which can be a nuisance, especially if you trying to locate your pet urgently. It does give you the exact location eventually but it will sometimes require some patience. This mostly depends on the quality of coverage of the mobile network operator at the given location.
The bottom line is that the Tractive GPS Pet Tracking device does the job well and offers some very innovative features. The initial price is great and if you don't mind paying the monthly sub then this is a highly recommended product for you. For us, some of the pointed out flaws come in second to all the benefits this device brings to the table and that is why we gave it a well-deserved rating of 4.3 out of 5
If you are looking for a more conventional GPS pet tracker that features options like remote training, maybe you should consider another dog gps device we already covered.
If you're just looking for a way to keep track of your favorite furry friend then you can't go wrong with this model.
